Sealed
The Meaning To help understand the significance at which we are "Sealed in Him", that is Sealed In Jesus, let us look at what the word sealed means. Sealed in the Greek is sphragizo, pronounced sfrag-id'-zo. Sphragizo means to stamp with signet or private mark for security or preservation, to keep secret, to attest, seal up or stop. It is also the stamp impressed as a mark of privacy or genuineness. When God places His seal upon us there is no one, or anything, that can take away that seal. If you could picture what was in His seal it would go something like this "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 8:38-39 Sealed in the Hebrew is to close up, make and end, mark or stop. In Esther 8:8 we read "You yourselves write a decree for the Jews, as you please, in the kings name, and seal it with the king's signet ring; for a letter which is written in the king's name and sealed with the king's signet ring no one can revoke." In this scripture you can see that the royal ring had a seal in it which, being affixed to any document, authenticated it with the stamp of royal authority. The ring itself had the king's name and that of his kingdom engraven on it. The decree or scroll was sealed with wax or clay and the king's signet was impressed and stamped into the wax or clay. Now the king also would give his signet ring to his vizier or prime confidential minister and this came with much ceremony. It was equivalent to putting the sign manual to a royal edict. One thing to note that when it says "no one can revoke", this is to mean that during the Persian Empire when a decree was written and signed, once passed into law was irrevocable. So is the same with God's law and promises.
The Sealing of the Believer Do you know today the significance God places on you His child? God's love and grace are so wonderful that even as I have done this study, I have felt overwhelmed by the depth of His love and how much emphasis He places on us, His adopted saints. "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give them eternal life and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand." John 10:27-28.
Earthly Seal vs. Godly Seal Even Kingly men cannot hold the King of King's and the Lord of Lord's. Mentioned only once in all four Gospels, the very tomb of Christ was sealed with the signet of an earthly king. I Matthew 27:66 it says ["And they went and made the grave secure, along with the guard they set a seal on the stone."] Excerpted from Josh McDowell's The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict, 1) A. T. Robertson says of the sealing of the stone at Jesus' tomb was Probably by a cord stretched across the stone and sealed at each end as in Dan. 6:17 ["And a stone was brought and laid over the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the signets of his nobles, so that nothing might be changed in regard to Daniel"]. The sealing was done in the presence of the Roman guards who were left in charge to protect this stamp of Roman authority and power. (Robertson, WPNT, 239) 2) D. D. Whedon says: "The door could not be opened, therefore, without breaking the seal; which was a crime against the authority of the proprietor of the seal." (Whedon, CGM, 343) You can see that the sealing of the stone ordered by Pilate was serious and was to make even defacing the tomb a crime. In placing the guard William Smith, in the dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities, says that the term guard was about 4 Roman guards, but in placing guards at the tomb it has been said to be 10 to 30 men according to Albert Roper in Did Jesus Rise from the dead? The result of this earthly seal was effective in human terms, but was useless against Jesus. In Matthew 28:2-4 we read ["And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.and the guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men."] There was no power in that seal on the tomb against the power of God.

God's Authentication
God's seal on us by His Holy Spirit is the authentication of His signet by indwelling us as believers. In John 14:16-17 we read "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him; for He dwells with you and will be in you. In 1 John 5:10 "The one who believes in the Son of God has the witness in Himself.". Again in Romans 8:16 "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." God gives us His signet by the Holy Spirit as the very seal of Himself being that the Holy Spirit is God Himself. Let's look at this through what the Bible says. In Acts 5:1-4 we read "But Peter said "Ananias why has satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God." God has given you His Holy Spirit, if you have received Jesus Christ by faith as your Lord and Savior.
God's Purchase
God's seal on us was "Ernest" or "Pledge" meaning part payment guaranteeing a complete transaction for us as His purchased possession. Acts 20:28 "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own Blood." Back to Ephesians 1:13b-14 ".having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory." In 2 Corinthians 1:22 "Who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee."
God's Ownership
God's seal on us shows ownership that we belong to Him. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 -Or do you not know that you body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
God's Security
God's seal on us gives us security, guaranteeing safe delivery to heaven and assurance of full redemption in glorification. Ephesians 4:30 "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." Romans 8:30 "Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom he justified, these He also glorified."
Completed Transaction
God's seal on us is a completed transaction. John 17:4 "Jesus prays and says "I have glorified You on earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do." John 19:30 "So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is Finished!" And bowing His head He gave up His spirit." When He said, "It is finished" and bowed His head willfully giving up His spirit that was it. Signed sealed and delivered! Read Jeremiah 32:9-12 for an example of an Old Testament transaction that was sealed.
God's Identity Impressed
God's seal on us gives us identification to God. This is not to say God does not already know who will except His signet and sealing. 2 Timothy 2:19 "Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His." Isn't it exciting to know that we have a "Mark of Privacy and Genuineness", that we are God's own purchased possession. No one in any religion in the world has the freedom we have in Jesus Christ. The burden and yoke of our sins have been lifted and taken from us and he extends to us His Golden scepter of approval allowing us to enter into His court at anytime with out fear. Most importantly we get our names written into the book of life. Philippians 4:3 "And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life." Revelation 21:27 "Speaking of the New Jerusalem to "But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life." Another one you can read is Revelation 20:12.
God is Worthy
God is the only one who is worthy and has authority to redeem His purchased possession bought at a price by the blood of His only begotten Son. Jesus being God is the I AM (John 8:24,8:56), the Alpha and Omega, beginning and end and the First and the Last. To summarize, remember when a scroll was sealed with the wax and the king's signet placed on it, only he who had the authority could open it. This means that only Jesus has the authority to claim that which he has sealed up. Also just like the Persian law, which could not be revoked, so also the seal of God's Holy Spirit is non-revocable. God's seal only comes through faith in Jesus Christ, and there is nothing that we can do on our own. God prompt's you, Jesus redeemed you, and the Holy Spirit sealed you. Let us close by looking at Revelation 5:1-5, "1) And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2) Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and loose its seals?".5) But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose it's seven seals." How glorious and wonderful, but unfathomable is God's love to place such a seal on us and call us His own. It is my prayer that you will see a glimpse of the significance God has placed on you His adopted child and you will know that no created thing shall separate you from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
