Prayer To Remove Idols From Your Life
(By Pat Lutz)
Lord Jesus, forgive us in this land and in our homes for the apathy we exhibit in our attitude toward idols and idolatry. It has always been a very serious offense to You and we have deceived ourselves into believing that we don’t worship idols in this culture. Lord, I acknowledge the truth that says the land is full of idols and that we bow down to the work of our hands, to what our fingers have made (Isaiah 2:8). Lord, this could be anything that I have in my home or work place ¾ anything that I hold more precious than You ¾ even my own family members.
Holy Spirit, I now ask You to search deep in my heart and expose and reveal all things which have knowingly or unknowingly become idols to me. Convict me deeply of those things that hold a higher place than You. If I am more disappointed in missing a favorite TV program or sporting event than I am in missing my quiet time with You, show me how that feels to You ¾ how much it grieves You. I want to hate my idols as much as You do, but I need your help. You say that those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs (Jonah 2:8). You also say that we are to put to death whatever belongs to our earthly nature such as sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry (Colossians 3:5). Oh, God, I don’t want to forfeit the grace that is mine for the sake of my fleshly desires, so please, show me how these things operate in my own life.
Lord, You say if we will submit to You and resist the devil, he will flee from us (James 4:7). I have submitted myself to You and I now choose to resist and renounce the idols of my life. Father, as You bring them to my mind, I will lay them on the altar to be crucified with Christ. In the Name of Jesus, I renounce the idol(s) of [let the Lord speak individually to you and name them all]. I declare and announce that I will have no other gods before me (Deut. 5:7); that I will put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts (Romans 13:14). I choose to lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles me, and to fix my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith (Hebrews 12:1,2).
Thank You, Jesus, that You not only give the command to put away false idols, but You give us the grace and strength to obey this important part of Your Word. I desire from this day forward to walk with You in love, power and soundness of mind.
In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, who came in the flesh, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Spiritual Discernment
(By Kathy Beard)
Oh, Lord our God, we sense that the days are upon us — the days spoken of by the prophets. We remember Your admonition to us "Do not be deceived . . . many false prophets shall arise saying ‘I am Christ’, and shall deceive, if possible, the very elect. (Matt. 24:24).
We acknowledge Your sovereignty, Oh Lord. We acknowledge our naïve and untaught and unstable heart before You. Lord, You tell us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs. 1:7). We reverence (fear) You. We acknowledge that we are easily lured into the seduction of the world by the riches and goods the world promises. We acknowledge that our ears are easily tickled by the lure of false unity being promoted by ecumenism in the Church today. We acknowledge that we have been content and comfortable in our ignorance of false prophets and false teaching and that we have not learned to discern between true unity in Your body, and the false unity the powers of darkness would try to counterfeit.
And now, Lord, our senses are dulled and our ears are not tuned to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. The temptation is strong in us to go with the throngs promoting religious unity regardless of the truth found only in Your Word.
Oh Lord, forgive our sins of complacency in the face of false teaching and false prophets. Forgive our sin of contentment in the fullness of bread and abundance of idleness. Forgive our neglect of the reading of the Word, rightly dividing the Word of truth, and prayer.
Lord, whether we are new Christians sincerely desiring the pure milk of the Word, or long-time Christians who are content only with the milk, or mature Christians who are being fed daily on the meat of the Word, we prevail upon You — quicken our senses, open the eyes of our understanding, give us supernatural discernment to be attuned to the deceptions of the enemy, no matter how embedded these deceptions are in the truth. We have no power in and of ourselves to sort through and sift out the error from the truth. But, we believe and trust that You, blessed Holy Spirit, are able to train our senses, beginning now, to detect the subtle lies of the enemy.
Lord, we renew our commitment to You today. We commit ourselves anew today to read Your Word over and above all other books, magazines, TV shows or computer time. We commit ourselves anew today to sit at Your feet and worship and praise You. We renew our commitment today to pray for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ for protection from the enemy and for spiritual discernment. We renew our commitment today to pray for the lost.
Lord, give us a hunger and a thirst for Your Word and for You. Protect our mind from the subtle deceptions of the enemy, Oh God — especially those deceptions that may deceive, if possible, the very elect. Protect our brothers and sisters in Christ from these deceptions. Couple this discernment, I pray, with Your mercy and lovingkindness so that we will not become abrasive and harsh toward our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who may be falling unawares into deception. Above all, let Your love, Your peace, Your joy, Your gentleness, Your faith, Your kindness, Your meekness, and Your self-control rule in our heart and our life. "In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be put to confusion" (Psalms 71:1).
We love You Lord and we thank You for Your word and the promises contained for us within that Word. We will give You the praise and honor and glory for the answer to this prayer. In Jesus most precious Name, Amen.
For Our Children in School
(From "Meet You at the Altar", Kathy Beard)
O God, our Father and our Lord, we come to Your awesome throne of grace today. We come humbly and in awe and wonderment because You are God and there is no other. We also come boldly, because You tell us that in Christ, we have been given the privilege to come boldly to Your throne of grace and we do not take lightly this precious honor.
Father, we know from Your word that Satan is as a lion who stalks his prey. You have told us that he steals and kills and destroys. You have shown us in Your word that he has a military regime and like any military, he has posted his army in strategic places in his campaign to destroy Your people. Father, the enemy has come in like a flood. He has increased his campaign of destruction, and he has targeted our children. You have instructed us in Your word that we are not to be ignorant of his schemes and You have provided us with armor for this battle. You have shown us, through scripture that we are not merely spectators in this heavenly war, but participators with You and through You.
Today we direct our attention as we bow before You, to the military outpost in our city and to the enemy who is assigned to stand at the gates of our schools, seeking whom he may devour. We acknowledge our complete dependence on You and upon the shed blood of Jesus as we pray for our children within these gates, and we take hold of the authority You have given us to stand against the enemy. You have told us "Behold, I give you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy and none shall by any means harm you" (Luke 10:19). We ask that you post a hedge of Your heavenly host around our schools today, to hold back and weaken the power that our enemy has over our school system. We speak Your own word out loud and boldly as Christ Himself did and we say that "The Angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear him, and delivereth them" (Psalm 34:7) and "No weapon that is formed against us shall prevail" (Isaiah 54:17).
Using our authority of the Word of God according to 2 Corinthians 10:4 that the "weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ", we, with one accord, pull down the stronghold of the spirit of rebellion in our schools, we pull down the stronghold of fear, we pull down the stronghold of New Age and false teaching. We pull down the stronghold of witchcraft, immorality and evil speaking. We pull down the evil stronghold of humanism that has held our teachers and schools captive for these long years. We ask You Holy Father, to begin now the work of replacing these strongholds with the strongholds of Your mighty power. We ask that You replace the stronghold of rebellion with Your sweet Spirit of submission and humility; the spirit of fear with power and love and a sound mind, and we ask that You give to our young people and our teachers the boldness to speak the Word of God without fear or shame to their fellow students. We ask that You weaken and displace spirits of false teaching, New Age and witchcraft with the sincere, pure milk of the Word of God.
O Lord, pour down upon our children Your love, joy, peace, gentleness, faith, kindness, meekness and self control, and give them wisdom ¾ the wisdom that You gave Daniel, a mere teenage boy who was made to work and serve in the palace of the most notorious false religious system the world has ever known. Yet, he stood firm and remained faithful to You and to Your word. This we pray for our children at school.
For You, Lord, are the victor over all the powers of darkness. You proclaimed victory over the enemy ¾ publicly displaying him as a spoiled and defeated foe. You, Lord Jesus, are seated at the right hand of God the Father "far above all principality and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come" (Ephesians. 1:21). We, as Christian parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and teachers, join with one voice and one accord and unite our hearts together today in agreement that You are the great I AM, the Most High God, who hears and answers prayer and we join ourselves to Your victory over all the power of darkness with assignment against our children and we know with absolute assurance, that You will set these captives free and protect them from all the power of the enemy.
We thank You, Father, in advance, for all You have planned and purposed to do in their hearts this coming year. Thank You for the weapons of our warfare provided in Your word. We commit ourselves today to putting on this armor every day, and stand in the gap for our children.
And we do all of this in the Name and in the power of our precious Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
